Fill in the west bulwark trench yielded this rear section of a human skull amid discarded garbage and trash of ca. 1610. Forensic analysis determined this to be from a mature European man who may have died during a surgical procedure known as trepanning—an attempt to save the injured man by drilling a hole in the skull. Saw marks indicate the procedure was unsuccessful and that an autopsy was performed.

Eighteenth-century drawing illustrating the trepanning procedure initiated on at least one Jamestown colonist. (Science Museum Pictorial/Science and Society Picture Library, London)
